There were some excellent nominations for our Grassroots Heroes of 2020, and we have reached our last 3 Heroes! Our final 3 are John Lindsay from Elvaston CC, Paul Scrimshaw from Melbourne Town CC, and William Woodward from Mugginton CC.
John Lindsay
John has been an active member of the groundsman association for many years and has helped in many ways. He has helped to bring club groundsman together throughout Derbyshire as well as helping to improve club grounds throughout the county league. He has truly made a difference to grassroots cricket!
John has now taken a step back and has retired from his role, but his hard work and determination for the recreational game across Derbyshire deserves recognition. Thank you for all you’ve done for grassroots cricket, John!
Paul Scrimshaw
Paul is the groundsman at Melbourne Town CC. During the 2020 season, he has gone above and beyond in his role at the club.
During the first lockdown, he continued to tend to the square and outfield so that the club was ready to start playing once the go-ahead was given in early July. Due to Paul’s commitment to preparing the ground, the club was able to cram in an unprecedented number of games within just three months. This included many extra junior matches, as well as a number of DCF Girls Pathway games.
Paul did all this work without ever complaining, he just made sure that the club was ready for each match. Without him, the club wouldn’t have got any cricket played in 2020 whatsoever making him a true unsung hero to everyone at Melbourne Town CC.

William Woodward
Will came home from university in late March and immediately started helping out at Muggington CC.
Without being asked he spent around 5 days a week at the ground from early April through to the end of August. During this time Will helped out a lot with the pitch, ground, and facility maintenance including;
- Mowing, scarifying, rolling, and aerating the square in conjunction with the groundsman
- Cutting , weeding , strimming, and tidying around the boundary hedges, fences, and pavilion
- Moving many tonnes of soil by hand
- Cleaning all the windows in the pavilion and generally looking after the pavilion
His help was invaluable in helping maintain the facilities but more importantly ensure that when we got the go ahead to play in mid-July, the club had everything in place to provide games for all our playing members. Everyone at the club thanks Will for giving up so much time to the club this year.
