In 2019, we ran some girls indoor cricket options at Willows. We had 4 weeks of U15 matches for girls, involving 4 teams. All participants seemed to enjoy a girl’s only indoor offer, which was the first for a while. We also put on an All Stars girls taster session at the end of March which went very well and all the girls really enjoyed it. These are two activities that we are going to add to our list to do more of going into 2020!
We are looking to grow this for 2020! We will be running 2 girls indoor leagues in 2020, an U13’s competition featuring 4 clubs from the north of the county and an U11’s competition for 5 clubs in the south of the county. The type of competition was determined by clubs based on demand. The dates for both leagues are as follows:
We also ran a ‘Have A Go’ girls taster session on Sunday 15th March at Willows Sport Centre. The girls that attended got a chance to practice their skills, play some games and have lots of fun!!
They were also lucky enough to have the chance of meeting England Women’s player, Sarah Glenn, fresh from the Women’s World Cup! Sarah was kind enough to not only help out with the session but also do a quick Q&A with the girls at the end of the session aswell as take pictures and give autographs. Sarah was joined at the session by Derbyshire Women’s players Lauren Tuffrey, Julia Draycott, and Alicia Shaw to provide a fun afternoon.

Denby, Duffield, Ilkeston Rutland, Spondon, Quarndon and Ockbrook & Borrowash Cricket Club supported by the Derbyshire Cricket Board have been working together over the past 9 months to develop the girls game at grass root level, along with Mickelover, Hilton, Ticknall, Etwall and Elvaston.
We invited girls from the clubs and any others who wanted to give it a go, to take part in some indoor girls only winter training sessions held at Derbyshire’s County Cricket Ground in the Air IT Elite Performance Centre. With 28 Girls signed up the sessions focussed on having fun, playing games in all manner of different varieties, keeping fit, healthy and learning a little bit more about cricket. It was a fantastic opportunity to give girls a great and lasting impression of cricket so that they return back to the game time and time again.
