Monday Mates - Dementia Friendly Group

Monday Mates is our newest project, funded through the Severn Trent Community Fund.

A café open to all, especially those affected by Dementia and their carers. It is a warm and welcoming space to have a hot drink and enjoy the company of others, alongside fun table top activities such as quizzes, puzzles, crafts and games. There is also a chance to take part in some adapted physical activity such as chair aerobics.

It runs the first Monday of every month, 10-12pm in the Legends Lounge, Incora County Cricket Ground, DE21 6DA. Don’t worry there will be lots of signs and people to point you in the right direction.

The aim of the café is to support wellbeing by reducing social isolation and loneliness, providing peer support for those living with Dementia and their carers. We also hope to increase physical activity and help to reduce cognitive and mobility problems through the activities ran.

The more the merrier, so why don’t you come along!

Volunteers required

We are also looking for Volunteers to support this project.

As a volunteer you would live life along side those who come for 2 hours each month, being a friendly face, a welcoming person to chat to and someone to join in with activities with them such as the monthly quiz, craft activities etc.

Volunteers don’t need any qualifications but dementia training would be preferable to help equip you for the role. Alzheimer’s UK will be running training here at the cricket ground on the 1st of June in order to become a Dementia friend. It will be informal and only an hour. If you cannot attend you can also complete this training online. We will also provide additional training and vetting checks to ensure volunteers are suitable to work with potentially vulnerable adults.

Volunteers can commit to coming as often as it suits whether that is each month or less often. Attending as many sessions as possible to as many as possible will help build relationships with those who attend and create continuity, which is especially beneficial for those with Dementia

Benefits to you as a volunteer:

  • To experience with working with older people and those affected by Dementia
  • Build up confidence in working in community projects
  • To help reduced social isolation and loneliness for those most vulnerable in your city
  • Experience and potentially run adapted exercise sessions
  • To build up vital life skills
