Derbyshire vs Nottinghamshire, Clifton CC, 20th July 2022
After our unbeaten winning streak on the road, today saw us back at home in Derbyshire at the delightful Clifton CC where hosts Roger and Trevor made us very welcome. Today’s format was agreed as a 30 overs a side contest and captain Ruby Swan continued her remarkable run by winning the toss once again, and choosing to bat.
This time Penny Tanner’s opening batting partner was Phoebe Blurton and together they made a nice start to the innings seeing off the Nottinghamshire opening bowlers; the first wicket falling in the 9th over with the score on 44. The girls batted steadily, all running well between the wickets and keeping the score moving along; whilst we lost wickets every now and then to some good bowling and fielding from the Notts side. Penny top scored with 29, but the highlight was probably watching our tallest player, Ava, batting with our smallest player, Autumn and putting on 23 runs for the last wicket. The final total was 146 all out after 28.4 overs.
After lunch we took to the field to defend our total. Anika Verma soon made a breakthrough, bowling the Notts opener on the first ball of her second over with the score on 16. There then followed a good 2nd wicket stand of 38 which was eventually broken in the 13th over when the Notts number 3 hit her wicket off the bowling of Olivia Crombie. Notts were behind the required scoring rate and never recovered it, finishing their 30 overs on 106 for 9. All 13 Derbyshire players bowled and all with a good economy rate, with just 3 no balls and 11 wides in total. There were also very few byes which is a credit to the good wicket keeping of Kyrie-Anna Shelton and Penny Tanner. The wickets were shared between 6 players, with Phoebe Blurton claiming 2 in one over and Hannah Reast going one better with 3 in one over; almost getting a hat trick.
Winning is becoming a habit with this team, now unbeaten after 8 games against 4 counties, and using a squad of 20 players with a couple more due to join us for the next few games. We are back at Clifton CC next week to see if we can win again against Staffordshire.
