Derbyshire U15 girls traveled to Blidworth Colliery CC to face local rivals Nottinghamshire in their first Royal London 40 over league fixture of the season on Tuesday 6th June.
On a day that was a lot colder than expected and had everyone reaching for extra layers, Derbyshire won the toss and elected to field first.
Emily Ford and Grace Wolfenden opened the bowling for Derbyshire and got us off to a steady start, but the Nottinghamshire openers got stuck in for the long haul managing to put on 76 before May Brown took the first wicket of the game in the 15th over after a brilliant catch at extra cover by Erynn Crosby.
Another stand by the Notts number 3 took them to 190 before Ruby Mcwhirter-Young struck and started a late flurry of wickets for Derbyshire. Ruby went on to take 3-18, while leg-spinner Charlotte Sisson took 2-46.
Nottinghamshire finished their 40 overs on 228-6, a chasable target for the Derbyshire batters to get stuck into.
A new opening partnership for this season saw Mim Aldred and Erynn Crosby walk out to the crease to begin the run chase for the Derbyshire Girls.
Some tight bowling from the Notts bowlers restricted our openers before Mim fell for 26 in the 14th Over at 40-1, bringing Sophia McCollum to the crease.
Sophia got stuck into the run chase making an excellent 112* from 88 balls, which included 17 4s and 2 6s. She was supported by Emily Walne (12) and captain May Brown (13*) but Derbyshire fell short of the target finishing on 195-3, 33 runs short.
A great learning experience for the side on their first outing of the season, with positives to take into their next games.
