Safeguarding Courses

Training for Club Safeguarding Officers and Committee Members

The ECB require Club Safeguarding Officers (CSO) to attend two sets of training for them and the club to be compliant:

  • ‘Safe Hands’ face to face workshop which is run by Derbyshire Cricket Foundation Ltd (DCF).
  • Safeguarding for Specialist Roles (SSR):
    • This is a free online course with two modules to complete – an overall module then a bolt-on specifically for committee members and club safeguarding officers. The combined training should take one hour twenty minutes. This has replaced the Safeguarding Young Cricketer’s (SYC) and Safeguarding & Protecting Children (SPC) courses.

Every three years, the requirements above must be updated.

All CSO’s must also have a current ECB DBS and should be on the DBS Update Service.

If you are a new CSO then to be fully trained before next season both courses and the ECB DBS must be completed. It is preferable to do the SSR course before the Safe Hands course and we would suggest that this is done as soon as you can if you need to do it.

We have arranged 5 Safe Hands courses over the winter 2024/25. You can do a course in a neighbouring county if that is more accessible but we would ask that you send a copy of your Safe Hands certificate so that our records are accurate.

The courses are listed below with the booking link and there is a charge of £10 per person. There is a limit on the numbers we can have at each venue.

Safeguarding for Specialist Roles (SSR)

The ECB have introduced the Safeguarding for Specialist Roles (SSR) on-line courses which form the foundation for individuals who hold a specialist role within cricket. This course is a direct replacement of the Safeguarding Young Cricketers (SYC) course, although the format has changed, and only needs completing once the SYC has expired.

The new courses are aimed at those who want and need more knowledge and information on effective safeguarding within your club. The courses are free to complete.

Those individuals in cricket who hold a specialist role should complete the one-hour course (worth 80% of their learning), as well as the shorter, specialist module relevant to their role (20% of their learning). Completing both elements is needed to complete the course and get a certificate; it also will update the Safe Hands Management System that a person is compliant.

If someone at your club has more than one role within a club, we recommend they sign up to the course in which they do the most volunteering. Individuals are welcome to complete all four specialist modules if they wish and all are free of charge.

The specialist modules available are:

If you have registered for a course that has an E-Learning component attached to it, you will receive an email shortly after registering on to the course, containing details on how to access the E-Learning site (also known as Moodle); https://elearning.ecb.co.uk

If you have not yet received your E-Learning email, please check your junk/spam folder and remember that some email addresses may be blocked by more stringent firewalls (particularly school and university email addresses). If you are yet to have received this email, you can contact E-Learning support at elearning@ecb.co.uk

You will access the E-Learning site / your E-Learning account via the Single Sign On (SSO) Portal. Your SSO credentials (username being your email address and a password of your choice) can be used to access both sites; E-Learning & Safe Hands system.

If you are a new user of the Single Sign On Portal, the email you receive (after booking on to your course) will contain and link and instructions on how to set up your access on the ECB Login Portal; including setting a password, accepting terms and conditions (please scroll down and check the tick boxes) and selecting your marketing preferences (please just select yes or no as you see fit). If you already have an existing SSO account (for an existing Safe Hands account), then you can use your existing password when logging in to E-Learning.

Once you have set up your account you can access the E-Learning site by going to:
