Grassroots Heroes: Rob Musselwhite and Steve Askew

There were some excellent nominations for our Grassroots Heroes of 2020, and we are going to highlight as many people as we can over the next month. Our next Grassroots Heroes are Rob Musselwhite from Eckington CC and Steve Askew from Hathersage CC.

Rob Musselwhite

Rob has taken on the role of chairman at Eckington CC and is credited for transforming it! The club morale was struggling before he took over the role. Leading by example, he has encouraged more people to volunteer to help out at the club, as well as providing an atmosphere that allows both juniors and seniors to want to play, develop, and succeed.

Whether it is cutting the grass, cleaning areas in the pavilion, or offering support for players, captains, and coaches, he makes himself available 24/7. A true asset to the club!

Steve Askew

Steve has worked incredibly hard to get the Hathersage junior cricket teams playing despite Covid. He set up twice weekly junior training at the club ground in a Covid safe manner and provided some normality and much needed exercise for the children in the village and beyond.

Once the go ahead for matches was given, he coordinated the teams and kept us all updated via the TeamApp. He arranged a final friendly intra club junior match to finish the season in style with medals for all. He also puts in a lot of behind the scenes work at the grounds. So many local children benefited from the chance to play cricket in these difficult times; he has been described as a local hero!

Well Done Steve!
