Grassroots Hero: Andy Hill

There were some excellent nominations for our Grassroots Heroes of 2020, and we are going to continue highlighting as many people as we can to the end of January. Our next Grassroots Hero is Andy Hill from Ashbourne CC.

Andy is the current 2nd XI captain and has been club groundsman at Ashbourne CC for the past 5 years.

During the first lockdown, he worked tirelessly preparing the square, on a daily basis, without pay. For many years the ground had been maintained by the Derbyshire Dales council. Andy took over this responsibility and set himself a target of making the pitch grade A standard. Following some mentoring sessions from Steve Hollis (Quarndon CC), Andy has worked tirelessly to improve the square almost to the point of a single-handed obsession.

He spent hundreds of hours preparing the wicket, not knowing if cricket would even be allowed to play this year. Needless to say, when the permission was given by the government the ground was already ready for use without delay. It is a testament to Andy’s hard work and dedication to the club and the sport.

Great Work Andy!
