3rd Annual Street Cricket Event at Derbyshire CCC a Great Success!

The Derbyshire Cricket Foundation and Sherwin Young Adults Street Cricket Club invited Derbyshire County Cricket Club and Chance to Shine to their annual street cricket competition on Monday 27th January.

The four-team tournament, sponsored by PAK Foods, produced an opportunity for the Sherwin Street Club participants to showcase their skills at the Elite Performance centre, rather than at their usual club home of the Sherwin Club at Pear Tree, Normanton.

Derbyshire Men’s First team Captain David Lloyd was in attendance again for the DCF but this year was also joined by Martin Andersson, Brooke Guest and Yousaf Bin Naeem who each played for one of the teams.

In a competitive group stage, the standout teams to make the final were the DCF and Sherwin Street Club, (Sherwin winning all three of their games). However, they came short in the final as the DCF avenged their defeat from last year, the returning Mitch Adlington putting in a player of the match performance with the ball.

The player of the tournament was 11-year-old Ibraheen Yousaf who started on our street programme two years ago at St Martins Youth club. He then went on to attend to the Sherwin Young Adults club a year ago and has this year been selected on the Derbyshire County Cricket Club Boys pathway. Breaking down barriers and using Street Cricket as his platform to chase his dream!

The night overall was a great success with everyone coming together as a community and participating in a sport that we all have a great passion for.

Our City Programmes officer Pete Boot, who is our lead on Street Cricket said:

“For me it was really pleasing to see the way the participants of Sherwin Street Club showcased their love of cricket. Many of them don’t have any other club, are not able to play cricket anywhere else so this tournament gave them an opportunity to experience facilities that are used by players of Derbyshire CCC. The coaches who run the session, Mohsin and Samil, have developed a great environment for people to attend and enjoy playing cricket. Next year I am hopeful that we can increase the number of teams with our Street Clubs so they can share this amazing opportunity”.
