The Derbyshire Cricket Foundation took on the Sherwin Young Adults Chance to Shine Street Cricket Hub in a 3-match series on Monday 30th January 2023
The young adult’s street project has been running over the past 5 years at a number of different locations in Derby City. In January 2022, the hub found its new home at the Sherwin Club in Pear Tree and is a booming success, with 32 regular attendees taking part.
Staff from the DCF, went along to the weekly young adult’s street project to take on the challenge set by the hub participants to see who would come out on top in a 3-match series. The event was organised by City Programmes Officer, Pete Boot, who said:
“The event was a great success, especially for the Sherwin Hub participants. They got an opportunity to showcase their skills and experiences from their time at the Hub against DCF staff, many of whom had never experienced Street Cricket before. It was a great showcase for the hard work and commitment that the participants have put in at the Hub and shows others exactly what the programme is all about.”
Community and Partnerships Manager, Mark Barber, added:
“It was great to see the engagement from the Street participants and the standard was really impressive. A fantastic event to be involved in where the DCF team were able to take part in a competitive series of matches with the young people who attend this hub and see the impact of the project first-hand. I can’t wait to see the new hubs up and running and making a similar impact on young people in other areas of Derby City. We are grateful for the support from Chance to Shine to provide the resource to make these hubs possible and are keen to grow the programme in the future.“
The DCF staff came out on top with a 2-1 victory, but that was only secondary to the atmosphere and impact that this event had on our participants. We hope to run more events like this in the future.
The DCF offer plenty of FREE Street Cricket opportunities at Dale Primary School, St Martins School, and Shirebrook Academy, as well as a Girls’ session at the Sherwin Club.
